Maria Schulman first came to yoga as a graduate student in New York City, hoping to find relief from the stress of the modern world. She didn’t find a quick fix, but was amazed at how much better she felt after just moving her body. Soon after, she was spending every free minute practicing and studying yoga. Too restless at heart for a life in academia, Maria left her grad program but still brings her inner geek to creating thoughtful sequencing in her classes and continues to study anatomy with Harvey Deutch. Other teachers who have inspired her include Steve Pyka, Rene Henly, and Devarshi Steven Hartman. She has been trained in a variety of styles, including Power Vinyasa, the Rocket Series, Yoga Therapeutics and the 26 Hot Postures. While she loves set sequences and the freedom that can be found within a fixed routine of poses and movements, her vinyasa classes have been described as original, light-hearted and “exactly what I needed”. Maria strives always to be a student first and to teach from her own experience. She takes pride in being able to meet her students where they are and feels that the greatest gift in practice and in teaching is simply being present, in as many ways as possible.
